L&T Dispatches Eighth Steam Generator for India’s Nuclear Expansion

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has dispatched the eighth steam generator for India’s 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor programme, three months ahead of its contractual delivery schedule. The equipment was manufactured at L&T’s Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, and is a critical component of a nuclear power plant.

The early dispatch supports India’s efforts to expand nuclear capacity, strengthen energy security and meet long-term decarbonisation goals. Nuclear power is expected to support rising electricity demand from data centres, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, increasing the importance of timely delivery of critical nuclear island equipment.

The milestone also highlights the capabilities of India’s domestic manufacturing sector in supporting large civil nuclear projects. L&T said the early delivery of all eight steam generators reflected its focus on nuclear safety, engineering quality and manufacturing excellence. The company also reaffirmed its partnership with Nuclear Power Corporation of India and its support for the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

India has set an ambition to increase its nuclear generation capacity to 100 GW. L&T’s manufacturing capabilities are intended to support this expansion through the production of steam generators, reactor headers, pressurisers, end shields, calandrias and components for fast breeder reactors.

L&T has contributed to India’s nuclear power programme for more than six decades. During this period, it has invested in advanced manufacturing technologies, automation and specialised fabrication facilities to establish an integrated ecosystem for complex nuclear engineering requirements. The latest dispatch underlines the role of domestic engineering companies in supporting clean energy generation, energy security and long-term economic development.
