Mahanadi Waterfront Project to Transform Cuttack’s Riverfront

The State government, in collaboration with urban development authorities and environmental experts, has announced the conceptualization of the Mahanadi Waterfront Project, a landmark initiative aimed at revitalising the riverfront while promoting ecological conservation and urban development. This transformative project will enhance the quality of life for residents, boost tourism, and preserve the river’s cultural, historical, and environmental heritage.

A high-level meeting was convened at Kharabela Bhawan, chaired by Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, Minister of Housing and Urban Development (H&UD), with key dignitaries including Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahatab, MLAs Sofia Firdous, Souvik Biswal, and Prakas Chandra Sethy, along with CMC Mayor Subhas Singh, Principal Secretary Usha Padhee, and senior officials from multiple government departments. The officials emphasised swift implementation of the project, ensuring that at least the Bali Yatra ground is ready before the upcoming fair.

Envisioned as a world-class urban and recreational space, the Mahanadi Waterfront will integrate green infrastructure, cultural preservation, and modern urban planning, fostering a blend of leisure, commerce, tourism, and environmental sustainability. Key features include:

Eco-friendly initiatives: Water quality management, waste treatment plants, and aquatic biodiversity protection. Smart urban planning: Green spaces, pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, and modern transportation networks. Tourism and recreation: Boating, kayaking, river cruises, cultural events, and festival venues. Community-focused development: Parks, playgrounds, and spaces for local artisans and small businesses. Climate resilience measures: Flood protection infrastructure, rainwater harvesting, and sustainable urban solutions. Industry and Market Outlook The Mahanadi Waterfront Project is poised to be a model for sustainable urban development, aligning with India's growing focus on green infrastructure and eco-tourism. With rising investments in waterfront redevelopment, the initiative will drive demand for smart city solutions, eco-friendly construction technologies, and sustainable tourism models. As urban centres prioritise climate resilience, similar projects across India are expected to shape the future of urban planning, making riverfronts vibrant, sustainable, and economically thriving hubs
