NHAI Deploys Anti-Smog Guns Across Delhi-NCR

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has deployed anti-smog guns, water sprinklers, tankers, mechanised road-sweeping machines and additional sanitation workers across Delhi-NCR to control dust on highways and expressways. The measures follow a deterioration in air quality after Dussehra celebrations.

NHAI officials said around 60 water sprinklers and tankers, 14 anti-smog guns, 23 mechanical road-sweeping machines and two tractor-mounted brooms had been deployed. More than 900 workers are supporting the dust-mitigation exercise, while 13 mechanical road-sweeping machines are operating across 157 km of national highway stretches within Delhi-NCR.

Delhi recorded an air quality index of 223 on Thursday, while Noida registered 242, Greater Noida 219, Gurugram 193 and Faridabad 117. NHAI Member (Technical) Alok Deepankar reviewed the pollution-control measures and directed field teams to ensure the full deployment of equipment, workforce and water sprinkling operations.

The instructions also cover regular use of anti-smog guns, daily mechanical sweeping and compliance with norms established by the Commission for Air Quality Management. These requirements include covering construction materials, maintaining dust-free road surfaces and intensifying action according to applicable stages of the Graded Response Action Plan.

Officials have been directed to monitor activities daily and submit progress reports with geo-tagged photographs. NHAI also planted around 980,000 saplings in the National Capital Region during FY25-26, exceeding its target of 952,000. The authority is reviewing decongestion projects, including Urban Extension Road-II, Dwarka Expressway, Delhi-Noida Direct-Sohna Expressway and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which are intended to reduce traffic congestion and vehicular emissions. Progress on these projects will be tracked, while complaints received through the Green Delhi app and social media platforms will be addressed.
