One Planet Partners Raises Rs. 30 bn PE Fund with SMTB

India-focused private equity firm One Planet Partners has launched its maiden fund and entered into a strategic partnership with Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank (SMTB), targeting deployment of more than Rs. 30 bn. The firm plans to achieve the fund’s first close by mid-2027.

SMTB has made a strategic equity investment in One Planet Partners and anchored the dedicated private equity fund managed by the firm. The fund will provide scale-up capital of Rs. 1 bn to Rs. 5 bn to mid-market businesses with annual revenues ranging from Rs. 2 bn to Rs. 20 bn.

The fund will focus on companies operating in energy transition, mobility and manufacturing. One Planet Partners said the strategy is aimed at supporting businesses with established operations that require capital to expand their scale and capabilities.

One Planet Partners was founded in 2024 by four partners. They are Mukund Rajan and Bobby Pauly, who previously worked in Tata Capital’s private equity business; Mrinalini Mirchandani, formerly a senior partner at McKinsey & Company India; and Sheetal Thakkar, who has worked at Blackstone and Tata Capital.

The firm has already completed its first investment by participating in the $93 mn Series C funding round of Bengaluru-based electric mobility company Yulu Bikes. Backed by Bajaj Auto and Magna International, Yulu operates in last-mile transportation and delivery, serving the quick-commerce and e-commerce sectors.

The partnership with SMTB highlights growing interest from Japanese institutional investors in India’s private markets. SMTB considers India a compelling long-term investment destination, while the collaboration gives One Planet Partners additional institutional backing as it builds its investment platform and deploys capital across its target sectors.
