Optiemus Opens India’s First Corning Tempered Glass Plant

In a landmark boost to India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, Optiemus Infracom, a leading homegrown electronics manufacturer, has inaugurated the country’s first manufacturing facility for tempered glass developed using Engineered by Corning™ technology. The state-of-the-art facility, located in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was inaugurated by Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics & IT, I&B and Railways, marking a historic advancement in India's electronics manufacturing capabilities.
With an initial investment of Rs 700 million, the Phase 1 facility will produce 25 million units of high-quality tempered glass annually, creating over 600 direct employment opportunities. The facility will feature end-to-end manufacturing infrastructure, transforming raw materials into finished tempered glass using cutting-edge global technology. As part of Phase 2, Optiemus plans to scale up capacity to 200 million units per annum, investing an additional Rs 8 billion, and generating more than 4,500 direct jobs to cater to both domestic and international markets.
Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the project as a testament to India’s growing advanced manufacturing prowess. “This facility strengthens our goal of building a USD 500 billion electronics manufacturing ecosystem. India is now the second-largest mobile manufacturing nation, and this investment by Optiemus will further help localise the accessories supply chain and create world-class products for the global market,” he said.
Optiemus Infracom’s Chairman, Ashok Kumar Gupta, stated, “Despite India being one of the largest mobile phone markets globally, we have long relied on imported tempered glass. This initiative allows us to build global-scale capabilities and offer BIS-certified, Made-in-India glass solutions. Our aim is for every Indian mobile user to rely on domestically produced screen protection.”
Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), added that tempered glass is a labour-intensive product category, offering huge potential for MSME development and job creation. “India has a domestic demand of over 500 million tempered glass units annually, valued at Rs 200 billion. With global demand exceeding USD 60 billion, this segment offers immense export opportunities if quality manufacturing is prioritised,” he said.
The new Noida facility is the first of its kind in India and comes equipped with advanced machinery and comprehensive capabilities including scribing, chamfering, polishing, dual-stage rinsing, chemical tempering, coating, printing, and lamination. Each stage undergoes stringent quality checks to deliver premium, standardised tempered glass to Indian consumers—entirely manufactured in India for the first time.
