A recent report by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in collaboration with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), South Asia, suggests that Thane has the potential to slash its carbon footprint by 22 per cent by 2026. According to the report, Thane's annual greenhouse gas emissions currently amount to 2.29 million tCO2e, around 1.09 tCO2eq per person. Predominantly, energy consumption, transportation, and waste contribute the most to emissions, with thermal power plants, vehicular exhaust and biogas from landfills and sewers identified as major sources.
