Titagarh Wins Rs 4.67 Billion Order for Coastal Research Vessels

Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), a leading Indian rolling stock and engineering solutions provider, has secured its largest order to date through its Shipbuilding and Maritime Systems (SMS) Division. The Rs 4.67 billion contract, awarded by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), covers the construction, trials, and delivery of two Coastal Research Vessels (CRVs) for the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

The new vessels will enhance India’s maritime research capabilities by supporting seabed geology studies, oceanic resource exploration, and environmental monitoring. Designed for long-duration missions and real-time analysis, the CRVs will enable offshore geological mapping, mineral exploration, and shipboard scientific research.

TRSL has a long history of contributing to India’s maritime sector, including building Coastal Research Vessels for the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), which supported critical oceanographic missions and were even showcased at the 12th Presidential Fleet Review. Building on this legacy, the company continues to establish itself as a trusted partner in shipbuilding and maritime innovation.

Commenting on the milestone, Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of TRSL, said: “We are honoured to partner with GRSE in delivering these specialised vessels for the GSI. This contract reflects the trust placed in our shipbuilding expertise and our shared commitment to advancing India’s maritime infrastructure. It aligns with the Government’s shipbuilding initiatives and our vision to position India as a global hub in this sector.”

Each CRV will operate within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone, at depths from 5 to 1,000 metres, with a service life of 30 years. The ships will feature eco-friendly electric propulsion, 360-degree rotatable thrusters, DP1 dynamic positioning systems, and state-of-the-art laboratories housing 22 types of scientific equipment.

Beyond research capabilities, the vessels will provide modern accommodation and recreational facilities, ensuring a supportive environment for scientists and crew during extended missions.

This landmark order underscores TRSL’s SMS Division as a growing force in India’s shipbuilding industry, contributing to maritime sustainability, innovation, and strategic infrastructure development.
