Traffic Signals Go Dark Across Pune During Prepaid Meter Work

As many as 51 traffic signals within the Pune Police Commissionerate limits became non-operational at around 8 am on Friday, raising the possibility of disruption for motorists across the city. Pune City Police attributed the outage to an issue that arose during the installation and updating of new prepaid electricity meters.

The failure affected junctions in different parts of the commissionerate area. Police did not release a list of the affected locations, leaving commuters without specific information about which signals had stopped functioning. The authorities also did not clarify how long the disruption would continue.

After the signals stopped working, police officials contacted the Electrical Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation to seek an explanation. A junior engineer identified as Murmure informed the police that prepaid meter installation and related updating work was under way in the area.

According to the information shared with the police, some traffic signals were affected while the meter-related work was being carried out. Efforts were subsequently initiated to restore the signals, although the police communication did not provide a confirmed timeline for bringing all 51 units back online.

Officials did not disclose the precise technical fault responsible for the disruption or specify when the ongoing prepaid meter work would be completed. The absence of a location-wise list meant that motorists had limited official guidance on which junctions required additional caution during the morning traffic period.
