UP Cabinet Approves 1,725 AC E-Buses for 18 Cities

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved the acquisition of 1,725 new air-conditioned electric buses to be deployed across 18 cities in the state. The decision forms part of a drive to modernise urban mobility and enhance commuter comfort while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The vehicles will expand the state fleet of electric buses and are intended to bolster public transport capacity in rapidly growing urban centres.

The move is presented as a measure to reduce urban air pollution and cut greenhouse gas emissions from road transport. Authorities highlighted that air-conditioned electric buses will provide cleaner and more efficient services compared with diesel models, improve reliability on scheduled routes and encourage a shift from private vehicles to public modes. Planners anticipate operational benefits in peak hours and for longer intra-city routes. Officials noted that maintenance regimes will be updated to reflect the technical needs of electric drivetrains and battery systems.

The rollout will include measures for charging infrastructure, depot upgrades and driver training to support daily operations and maintenance. Distribution of vehicles will be planned across municipal transport undertakings to address route demand and connectivity gaps. The programme is also described as an opportunity to integrate electric bus services with existing urban mobility schemes and feeder networks. Logistical planning will consider peak demand corridors and off-peak service patterns to optimise utilisation.

The cabinet decision follows a broader policy focus on sustainable transport and aims to improve the passenger experience while reducing operational costs over time. Officials signalled that procurement and deployment schedules will be coordinated with city authorities and transport agencies to ensure timely induction of new buses. Implementation timelines and specific city allocations will be announced by the transport department as procurement progresses. The initiative is intended to influence private travel choices and contribute to cleaner urban environments.
