Hindalco to invest around Rs 10k cr in Hirakud, Silvassa, Mundra plant

Hindalco Industries, an Aditya Birla Group subsidiary, is set to invest Rs 8,000-10,000 crore in the Hirakud, Silvassa, and Mundra facilities.

The funds will be used to expand flat rolling capacity in Hirakud, Odisha, build a new extrusion factory in Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and build a greenfield site with a recycling facility in Mundra, Gujarat, according to the Annual Report 2020-21 of Hindalco.

Hindalco announced that over the next three to seven years, it expects to expand its aluminium downstream business with an emphasis on value-added products (VAP) and that its products will cater to specific requirements for a variety of aluminium applications.

The flat-rolled product capacity of the Hirakud facility is anticipated to reach 3,40,000 tonnes per year.

The extrusion plant in Silvassa will have a capacity of 34,000 tonnes per year and three extrusion presses to serve premium customers in the building and construction, automobile and transportation, electrical, consumer and industrial goods sectors.

Furthermore, land acquisition for a new extrusion and recycling unit in Mundra is in the works, with a capacity of 93,000 tonnes per year.

In India, the emphasis is still on downstream value-added offerings, especially in the Flat-Rolled Products (FRP) and extrusions segments.

The company cites that it is committed to deploying resources to transform this vertical into a future EBITDA growth driver since the market segment presents significant untapped opportunities.

Demand for aluminium in the country trails far behind that of the rest of the world. According to the report, this, combined with lower per capita aluminium consumption, bodes well for strong demand growth in the medium to long term.

In terms of its operations in India, the company said that expanding the Utkal Alumina refinery will improve operational efficiencies while it continues to invest in modernising existing alumina capacities, resulting in higher quality output and lower on-site costs.
