Tata Steel to deploy electric vehicles for steel transportation

Steel manufacturing major Tata Steel has collaborated with an Indian based start-up company to deploy Electric Vehicles (EV) for its steel transportation.

This effort is a part of its sustainability initiative and records the first deployment of EVs by a steel manufacturer for transporting finished steel in the country.

The steel firm has contracted for 27 EVs, including 35 tonnes of steel capacity of every one of them.

The firm plans to deploy 12 EVs at its Sahibabad plant and 15 EVs at its Jamshedpur plant. The first EV set for Tata Steel is in operation among Pilkhuwa Stockyard and Tata Steel BSL’s Sahibabad Plant in Uttar Pradesh.

Tata Steel officially flagged off the vehicle at the Pilkhuwa Stockyard to move to the Sahibabad plant, which is 38 km away, at a virtual ceremony organised on July 29.

The deployed EVs include a 2.2 Ton 230.4 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack with an advanced cooling system and a battery management system, providing it with the capability to run at temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius (°C).

The battery pack powering would be with a 160-kWh charging setup, which would charge the battery from 0-100% within 90 minutes. Every EV would decrease the GreenHouse Gases (GHG) by over 125 tCO2e each year by zero tailpipe emission.
