Ahmedabad Airport Saves Water With Smart Irrigation

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad has implemented advanced cloud-based smart irrigation technology to manage its horticulture areas, saving over 17 million litres of water annually. Managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the system uses sensors and real-time weather data to optimise irrigation, enhancing greenery without excess usage.

Spanning 17 acres of landscaped space, the technology ensures precise watering while enabling control from remote locations, including smartphones. This eco-friendly initiative is part of the airport’s broader sustainability agenda, which includes energy-efficient lighting and waste reduction measures.

In financial year 2024–25, the airport served 13.4 million passengers, a 14.8 per cent rise from 11.6 million the previous year. Domestic passengers exceeded 11 million, with international travellers surpassing 2.2 million.

Currently, the airport handles over 36,800 daily passengers across 288 flights and connects to 48 domestic and 16 international destinations. New routes include Don Mueang, Kuala Lumpur, Da Nang, and domestic additions like Guwahati and Dimapur.

With increasing connectivity and infrastructure innovation, the airport is emerging as a major hub. The success of smart irrigation highlights the potential for sustainable practices in Indian aviation.
