Bengaluru's Second Airport Evaluation Underway

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated evaluations for a proposed second airport in Bengaluru to address the city's increasing air traffic demands. Two locations near Chudahalli and Somanahalli off Kanakapura Road have been inspected, with a third site near Magadi-Nelamangala on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road slated for assessment.

Karnataka's Infrastructure Development Minister, M B Patil, emphasised the necessity of a transparent selection process, highlighting Bengaluru's industrial growth and the resultant strain on Kempegowda International Airport. The Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) has allocated Rs 12.1 million to AAI for a comprehensive feasibility study.

This study will consider various technical and environmental factors, utilizing resources such as revenue maps, a decade's worth of meteorological data, geographic assessments, terrain imagery, and operational feasibility reports. The establishment of a second airport is deemed essential to accommodate Bengaluru's expanding air traffic and support its economic development. The final site selection will be based on AAI's recommendations, aligning with the city's specific requirements.
