Domestic Aviation Industry May Post Rs. 360-380 bn Losses in FY27

India’s domestic aviation industry is expected to post net losses of Rs. 360-380 bn in FY27, compared with estimated losses of Rs. 280-300 bn in the previous fiscal year, ratings agency Icra said. The projected deterioration reflects weaker passenger traffic growth and a sharp increase in operating costs.

The agency said higher aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, rupee depreciation and foreign exchange losses would be the primary drivers of the industry’s financial performance. The depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar is expected to raise costs for airlines with dollar-linked expenses.

The onset of the war in West Asia in late February 2026 is expected to further dampen air passenger traffic growth during FY27. Slower traffic expansion could limit airlines’ ability to absorb higher costs through greater capacity utilisation and increased passenger volumes.

Airlines are also facing higher lease rentals amid continued aircraft deliveries, adding to the pressure on their balance sheets. Icra said the combined effect of increased aircraft-related expenses, elevated ATF prices and currency movements was projected to push the sector’s net loss to Rs. 360-380 bn.

The agency noted that the cost increases might not be passed on adequately to passengers through higher airfares. This could constrain revenue growth even as carriers attempt to manage inflationary pressures across fuel, leasing and other operating expenses. The outlook highlights the sector’s exposure to global energy prices, currency volatility, geopolitical disruptions and the pace of domestic travel recovery.
