Karnataka Accelerates Plans for Bengaluru’s Second Airport

The Karnataka government is pushing forward with plans for Bengaluru’s second airport, having already paid Rs 121 million to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for land assessments. State Industries Minister MB Patil announced that AAI officials will visit three shortlisted locations between April 7 and April 9 to determine the most suitable site for construction.

Surging Air Traffic Drives Urgency With Bengaluru witnessing a continuous rise in air traffic, the government is keen to fast-track the project. Speaking to reporters, MB Patil emphasised the need for a second airport to accommodate growing passenger numbers and commercial demands.

“A multidisciplinary team from AAI will conduct a feasibility study from April 7 to April 9. The government has already allocated Rs 121 million for this assessment. With the 150-km airport restriction set to expire by 2033, we are accelerating the process,” he stated.

Proposed Locations for the New Airport The state has shortlisted three potential sites:

Two locations along Kanakapura Road, spanning 4,800 and 5,000 acres One site on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road, covering 5,200 acres The Karnataka government has assured the Centre that it is prepared to allocate a minimum of 4,500 acres for the project at any of these sites. With the AAI feasibility study underway, Bengaluru moves one step closer to securing a second airport, poised to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth in the region.

The Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, has reached a major production milestone with the manufacture of its 15,000th passenger coach on December 15, the Ministry of Railways said.
