Kolkata Airport to Expand Parking Bays from 73 to 132

Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, or NSCBI airport, will undertake a Rs. 3.37 bn project to expand aircraft parking and operational space on the southern side of the terminal. The apron project is scheduled for completion in three years.

The expansion will increase the number of aircraft parking bays from 73 to 132. The additional space will support aircraft parking, servicing and ground-handling operations, strengthening the airport’s airside infrastructure as passenger traffic continues to recover.

NSCBI airport handled around 11 mn passengers during the first half of 2025 and about 22 mn during the full year. Its annual passenger-handling capacity has recently increased from 26 mn to 28 mn, while a larger redevelopment plan is intended to raise the capacity to around 45 mn passengers by 2032-33.

The redevelopment plan includes replacing the old domestic terminal with a U-shaped international terminal equipped with 21 aerobridges. It also provides for an additional 60,000 sq ft in the international section to accommodate immigration, customs and other passenger facilities.

The airport’s runway-handling capacity has increased from 35 to 45 flights an hour following the addition of taxiways and rapid-exit corridors. The domestic departure area has been expanded by 993 sq m, while a further 300 sq m is planned for the international departure section. Together, the projects are intended to improve aircraft movement, passenger processing and operational capacity as demand rises.
