More than 202 railway stations to get airport-like security

Airport-like security with passengers and visitors going through checks before accessing platforms will be added to more than 200 railway stations in India. Reports suggest that the new security system will be first introduced at Hubli in Karnataka and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.

Limited entry and exit points for better monitoring are expected to be set up at railway stations. Checks will involve scanning luggage and commuters will be advised to reach the station early. Also, no cut off time to enter the platform will be imposed.

With the help of advanced technology, security in the station would reportedly include real-time face recognition software to alert the RPF command centre about known offenders. All the entry and exit points will be mapped and either boundaries or fencing would be set up to stop entry of people from multiple points. Blueprint of integrated security system (ISS), which includes installation of CCTV cameras, access control, personal and baggage screening system, are reportedly ready for implementation at 202 more stations.

In 2016, the railways had approved ISS to strengthen surveillance mechanism at 202 railway stations. Based on the report of a high level committee and in consultation with the zonal railways, 202 stations have been reportedly identified as sensitive for the purpose of installation of ISS to strengthen surveillance mechanism at these stations.
