630 m Bypass Project in Chennai Awaits Coastal Body Nod

Construction of a 630 m bypass linking Greenways Road with Durgabai Deshmukh Road in Chennai has been stalled for more than a year because the project is awaiting Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance. The road is intended to ease congestion in RA Puram, Santhome and Adyar.

The three-lane, unidirectional bypass will be 10.5 m wide and run from the intersection of D G S Dhinakaran Road and R K Mutt Road to the embankment of Thiru Vi Ka Bridge. State Highways awarded the Rs. 265 mn contract in February 2025, and work began near the bridge before being stopped within a few months.

The proposed alignment will pass through the Pet Animal Care Centre, located about 50 m before the Government Music College, and continue through land beside MGR Janaki College before reaching the bridge. Because part of the road runs along the Adyar riverbanks near the bridge, the project requires approval from the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority.

A proposal seeking the clearance has been submitted to the authority, according to a senior highways official. Work is expected to resume after approval is granted. The bypass will enable vehicles travelling from Mylapore, Santhome and RA Puram to reach Adyar without using Durgabai Deshmukh Road.

After completion, the highways department plans to remove the median on Durgabai Deshmukh Road and make the stretch one-way for traffic moving from Adyar towards RA Puram and Abiramapuram. Vehicles using the new route are expected to reduce pressure on roads connecting Santhome, R K Mutt Road and Greenways Road, where peak-hour queues currently extend up to 2 km in both directions.
