Foreign automakers hunt Indian talent for expansion

Overseas automobile and component manufacturers' Indian units are intensifying their quest for local talent to drive expansion initiatives, say industry insiders. Roles like engineering, research, design, and IT within auto captives have seen a 20-40% surge in specialized talent demand this year.

Companies including Renault, Volkswagen Group, and Mercedes-Benz are aiming to bolster their Indian teams, as reported by their respective country heads. Renault, amid significant investments in India, plans to recruit approximately 2,000 new employees in various sectors. Mercedes-Benz India seeks a workforce adept in data analytics and e-commerce development, intending to hire 15-20% more from campuses compared to the previous year.

The trend is noticeable within engineering, research, and design captives, particularly in mechanical, electronics, and electrical domains, according to Vijay Sivaram, CEO of Quess IT Staffing.

As the country positions itself as a global green and sustainable transportation manufacturing hub, companies like BYD, Citroën, Kia, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and more plan EV launches, thereby driving the domestic EV market's growth and accessibility.

The demand for skilled professionals is expanding, particularly in areas like cockpit and interior design, infotainment, EV battery management systems/charging, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and automotive open system architecture (AUTOSAR).

Recruitment for mid-senior level positions is on the rise as companies seek to augment their innovative capacities, affirmed Aditya Narayan Mishra, CEO of Ciel HR Services. This push for talent acquisition aligns with the broader transition towards electric mobility and India's aspiration to become a manufacturing hub for sustainable transportation.

Notably, companies like Magna, Marelli, Stellantis, and Fisker are also seeking skilled professionals, according to Ciel HR Services' data.
