MMRDA Enhances Metro Access with Four Railway-Linked Foot Overbridges

To enhance last-mile connectivity to the Mumbai Metro Green Line-4 and 4A (Wadala–Thane), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated the development of four new foot overbridges (FOBs) connecting key suburban railway stations to the metro network.

According to a report by Mid-Day, tenders have been floated for constructing FOBs at Pant Nagar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, and Vijay Garden (Thane), with an estimated budget of Rs 1.29 billion allocated for the project. An additional Rs 80 million is earmarked for utility relocation works. The newly planned bridges will link the metro stations with existing pedestrian infrastructure, including skywalks at Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, and Bhandup.

This effort is a critical step in improving intermodal connectivity for commuters and ensuring seamless access between rail and metro systems—particularly in densely populated transit corridors.

In a related development, MMRDA is also addressing environmental concerns associated with the metro construction. In February 2025, the authority proposed the clearance of an additional 9,900 trees in the project zone. Of these, 7,016 are planned to be relocated within the vicinity, while 2,884 will be felled. Across both phases of development, a total of 3,716 trees will be cut, 7,590 will be relocated, and 1,094 will remain undisturbed.

To mitigate the ecological impact, MMRDA has committed to planting approximately 25,000 new trees, as part of a broader compensatory afforestation plan aimed at preserving the region’s green cover.

These initiatives underscore MMRDA’s dual focus—on infrastructure modernisation and sustainable development—while enhancing the convenience and experience of public transport users across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
