NHAI to deploy AI to monitor traffic

The Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, which is "half constructed," has somewhat reduced traffic congestion. As a result of the rise in traffic accidents, authorities have faced difficulties. The Indian National Highways Authority (NHAI) has now chosen to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor traffic. Sridhar, the project director at NHAI, claims that AI cameras will be useful in reducing overspeeding and accidents.

“We are planning to install AI enabled cameras for every 500 metre of road stretch. We have written to the centre seeking permission for the same under the intelligent transport system,” he said. If the center approves the proposal, then a command center would be set up either at Bengaluru or Mysuru to keep a tab on the camera footage.

According to policy, since the highway's opening in phases over the past three months, there have been at least 65 accidents, in which 22 people have died. Therefore, it's important to guarantee lane discipline in addition to accident prevention. Authorities believe they can monitor the full 118 KM stretch of the expressway if there are cameras every 500 metres. Operators in the control centre can promptly notify the ambulance and local police in the event of an accident or emergency. Plans exist to reduce speeding. We are developing a system to integrate speed radars so that speeding is automatically recognised and a traffic ticket is issued in the offender's name, according to an official.

“There are plans to control speeding. We are working to fit speed radars”- an official.

Currently, the highway's posted speed limit is 100 kmph. However, the speed restriction has been set at 80 kmph throughout several sections. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has placed fixed signs indicating the top speed limit on the medians.

“It is common to see to speed limits. But, it is better to drive below 100 kmph as there is a need to prevent road accidents. There are many loopholes as we find many vehicles coming in the opposite direction and this can be hindrance to the vehicles zooming on the highway,” said Sudesh S, a commuter.
