PMRDA Clears Rs 1.56 Billion Plan To Ease Chakan Traffic

Efforts to ease severe traffic congestion in the Chakan industrial corridor are set to progress, with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) receiving approval to undertake road widening and strengthening works worth Rs 1.56 billion in Khed taluka.

Senior officials told The Times of India that the clearance covers seven PMRDA-managed stretches costing Rs 1.00 billion and five Major District Roads estimated at Rs 565 million.

The approval followed a formal request by metropolitan commissioner Yogesh Mhase to district collector and election officer Jitendra Dudi, seeking permission to issue work orders during the ongoing model code of conduct. Dudi said permission was granted only after confirming that the stretches lie outside restricted jurisdictions.

Mhase noted that PMRDA’s executive committee had already sanctioned the works, and contractor appointments will proceed shortly. He added that commencement orders had been delayed due to the model code and emphasised that the package forms part of “immediate measures to ease pressure in the Chakan belt”.

Traffic congestion in the region has intensified due to rapid industrial development, high logistics movement and narrow roads struggling to handle increasing volumes.

The upgrade plan includes widening existing 3.75-metre roads to between 5.5 and 10 metres, with concrete or asphalt used depending on the location. All works will be supported by a ten-year maintenance guarantee.
