Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro line launched with German support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated a new metro line in Ahmedabad, which connects the city with the state capital, Gandhinagar, thereby enhancing environmentally friendly transportation for the region's nine million residents. The inauguration occurred during the RE-INVEST renewable energy investors conference.

German Development Minister Svenja Schulze, who attended the conference as a representative of Germany, met with Prime Minister Modi earlier. The project, which is valued at 600 million euros and partially funded through a German development loan, incorporates technology from Siemens, a German company responsible for the line’s electrification.

Minister Schulze emphasised the importance of the metro line, noting that India’s cities were growing rapidly and that relying solely on car transport would worsen congestion and pollution. She described the focus on sustainable metro transport in Ahmedabad as a model of Indo-German collaboration that benefits both the environment and the people.

Furthermore, she mentioned that this cooperation supports India’s development while aligning with Germany’s interest in global infrastructure investment.
