Delhi Metro boosts 5G connectivity

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) takes a giant stride in enhancing passenger convenience by introducing 5G connectivity to all of its 69 underground stations. With the goal of eliminating connectivity gaps within its underground expanse, the initiative has already upgraded 29 stations successfully, while ongoing infrastructure work targets the remaining 40 stations, including interconnected tunnels.

Of the expansive 390.1km DMRC network, the underground stretch covers 102.4km. The introduction of 5G services within these underground stations promises commuters uninterrupted high-quality streaming, efficient online transactions, and real-time updates. This substantial signal enhancement not only reduces call drops and connectivity issues within the metro stations but also while travelling underground.

DMRC officials have initiated discussions with prominent telecom service providers such as Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone to extend 5G connectivity to these underground stations. The comprehensive task of laying cables and installing equipment for 5G mobile connectivity is anticipated to conclude within a span of five months.

The intricate nature of the installation process, particularly within the underground domain, presents a challenging endeavour. To minimise disruptions to passenger services, the installation is scheduled during night hours, optimising the limited time window available.

While the current metro network successfully offers 4G mobile services, including the Airport Express Line, DMRC has made strides in constructing a robust infrastructure. This includes a network of telecom towers, in-building solutions (IBS), and small cells. IBS significantly bolsters mobile connectivity, especially within confined spaces or structures, and is deployed in 29 underground stations. About 240 telecom towers contribute to enhanced coverage across elevated corridors within a 250-metre radius. Additionally, small cells amplify coverage within a 100-metre radius, addressing areas with limited towers.

Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, emphasises the organisation's commitment to elevating mobile connectivity standards across its extensive network, particularly within the underground stations. As DMRC embraces 5G technology, the project exemplifies a fusion of challenges and advancements, ultimately enhancing the metro experience for millions of passengers.
