India Adds 700 km of Metro Lines in a Decade, Says Housing Minister

India has achieved a significant milestone in urban transportation with over 700 kilometres of new metro lines made operational in the past decade. This was highlighted by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, emphasising the government's commitment to improving urban mobility and reducing congestion in major cities.

The expansion of metro networks across the country has been a key focus of urban development policies, aimed at providing efficient, reliable, and sustainable public transportation options. This massive addition to the metro infrastructure spans various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai, among others, reflecting the government's push to enhance urban connectivity and support economic growth.

The minister attributed this rapid expansion to the government's proactive approach in facilitating metro projects through policy support, funding, and collaboration with state governments. The metro systems have not only eased traffic congestion but also significantly reduced travel time for millions of commuters, offering a more eco-friendly alternative to road transport.

Moreover, the extension of metro lines into suburban areas has played a crucial role in decongesting city centres and promoting balanced urban development. The ongoing metro projects, which are in various stages of construction and planning, are expected to further extend the network by hundreds of kilometres in the coming years.

This achievement underscores India's growing focus on modernising its urban transport infrastructure, aligning with global trends towards sustainable and integrated urban mobility solutions. The government remains committed to expanding metro connectivity, with the aim of enhancing the quality of life for urban residents and supporting the country's economic development.
