Indian Railways Ups Production of Locos, Coaches & Wheels

Indian Railways (IR) has reported significant growth in the manufacturing of coaches, locomotives, wheels, and axles for the financial year 2024-25.

Wheels: Production increased from 1.98 lakh (198,000) in 2023-24 to 2.43 lakh (243,000) in 2024-25, marking a 23% rise. Locomotives: Production grew by over 9%, from 1,235 units in 2023-24 to 1,346 units in 2024-25. Coaches: Manufacturing rose by 12%, from 5,169 in 2023-24 to 8,805 in 2024-25. Axles: Production increased by 7%, from 77,636 units to 83,275 units. Additionally, the number of women loco pilots has grown five-fold over the past decade, from 371 in 2014 to 1,828 in 2024.

The Railways continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities and promote gender inclusivity.
