India's First Hydrogen Train to Be World's Most Powerful: Vaishnaw

Indian Railways is advancing a cutting-edge project to develop the country's first hydrogen-powered train, which is expected to become one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen trains globally. This initiative involves retrofitting a hydrogen fuel cell onto a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake as a pilot project. The specifications for the train, which is fully indigenously designed, have been prepared by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

The hydrogen train is set to be among the longest in the world and one of the most powerful hydrogen trains currently in existence. In addition to the train, the project will include the development of infrastructure for hydrogen refuelling, which will feature an integrated facility for hydrogen production, storage, and dispensing. This facility has already received the necessary safety approvals from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).

This project underscores Indian Railways' commitment to promoting alternative energy-powered train travel, marking a significant step towards a cleaner, greener future for the country's transportation sector. The development of hydrogen-powered trains aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and the reliance on traditional fuels, positioning India at the forefront of sustainable rail travel innovation.
