K-RIDE Launches Long Girders for Chandapura Rail Bridge

Rail Infrastructure Development Company Karnataka (K-RIDE) has launched two 61-metre Open Web Girders (OWGs) for railway overbridge No. 470 near Chandapura in southern Bengaluru. The bridge crosses Hosur Road, designated National Highway 44, and forms part of the Baiyappanahalli-Hosur railway doubling project.

Each girder weighs about 245 t, making the installation a technically significant operation for the project. K-RIDE said the structures are the longest girders it has launched for a railway doubling project in Bengaluru, reflecting the scale of the work being undertaken at the Chandapura crossing.

The first girder was launched on October 10, while the second was installed on October 28. The work was carried out over the existing railway bridge, with the girders positioned to support the planned rail infrastructure and associated road improvements.

The Baiyappanahalli-Hosur railway doubling project covers 48 km. K-RIDE is targeting completion by January 2027, after which the railway works connected with the bridge will be followed by the demolition of the existing structure and other required improvements.

The planned changes are expected to support the expansion of Hosur Road to 12 lanes and help reduce congestion along the busy corridor. The Chandapura bridge works are therefore linked not only to the railway doubling programme but also to the proposed improvement of road capacity in southern Bengaluru. K-RIDE’s latest installation marks a further construction milestone as the agency progresses towards the project’s target completion date.
