Larsen & Toubro Wins Major Dhaka Metro Line 1 Contracts

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured major Design and Build contracts for two system packages of Dhaka Metro Line 1 in Bangladesh. The orders cover track works, electrical systems, signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors for the country’s first underground metro project.

The contracts were awarded by Dhaka Mass Transit Company as Bangladesh advances plans for three metro rail projects in the capital. The projects are part of an estimated Tk 2.5 tn programme, while the country’s Executive Committee of the National Economic Council has approved 12 projects with a combined estimated cost of Tk 1.69 tn, including the three metro initiatives.

L&T’s transportation infrastructure business will execute Contract Package CP09 for track works and electrical systems, and CP10 for signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors. The company classifies orders valued above Rs. 50 bn as major orders. CP09 will be delivered by L&T in partnership with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation.

The CP09 scope includes design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of track works, power supply and distribution systems, traction substations, overhead catenary systems and associated electrical facilities across the corridor. Under CP10, L&T will provide signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors throughout the network.

Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Dhaka Metro Line 1 will span approximately 31 km and include 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj. Its Airport Route will connect Kamalapur with the airport, while the Purbachal Route will run from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal.

L&T previously delivered the integrated railway systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, Bangladesh’s first metro rail corridor, which is in commercial operation. The company said its experience on Line 6 and its ongoing work on Jakarta Metro would support the integration of multiple systems and coordination with equipment manufacturers and other project stakeholders for Line 1.
