Maharashtra Agrees to Konkan Railway Merger with Indian Railways

Maharashtra has signaled its agreement to the long-pending merger of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) with Indian Railways, joining Kerala, Goa, and Karnataka, which have already approved the move. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the state’s willingness, provided the Konkan Railway name is retained—an assurance given by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

KRCL, established in the 1990s, operates as a joint venture between the Railway Ministry and the governments of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. However, its status as a corporation has restricted financing avenues, limiting crucial projects such as track doubling and infrastructure upgrades.

The state government will soon formally convey its approval to the Union Railway Ministry, paving the way for the full integration of Konkan Railway into Indian Railways.
