NF Railway Launches Girder on World’s Tallest Pier Bridge in Manipur

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reached a significant engineering milestone by successfully completing the girder launch on the iconic Noney Bridge in Manipur.

Regarded as an engineering marvel, the Noney Bridge is recognized as the world’s tallest railway pier bridge. It forms a crucial part of the 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal railway line project.

Recently, the final span of the bridge was successfully erected, marking the completion of all eight spans of this monumental infrastructure venture.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, stated that this accomplishment represents an important milestone in the bridge’s construction. He emphasized that the bridge is not only an engineering marvel but also a vital component of the region’s transportation network.

Sharma highlighted that the bridge’s global distinction lies in its record-breaking piers—P3 and P4—each reaching an impressive height of 141 metres, making them the tallest bridge piers worldwide.

The bridge’s configuration includes steel spans arranged as 1x71.5m + 5x106m + 1x71.5m + 1x30m, a strategic design that ensures structural stability while enabling the structure to withstand the challenging terrain and environmental conditions of the region. This design underscores the bridge’s importance in improving regional connectivity and fostering development.

Constructed to endure the complex geological and climatic challenges of the area, the bridge spans difficult hilly terrain and deep valleys.

Sharma further explained that the successful completion of the superstructure launching showcases the dedication, innovation, and engineering excellence of the teams involved, who worked tirelessly in one of India’s most challenging environments.

The Jiribam-Imphal railway project is considered one of the key connectivity initiatives for the Northeast. The section from Jiribam to Khongsang, spanning over 55.36 km, was commissioned in September 2022 and currently operates regular goods trains to Khongsang.

According to Sharma, as the project progresses, the Khongsang-Noney section (18.25 km) and the Noney-Imphal section (37.02 km) are expected to be commissioned in the coming years. Upon completion, the Jiribam-Imphal railway line is anticipated to revolutionize connectivity in Manipur and drive economic growth in the region.
