NPG Reviews Key Rail Projects to Strengthen Multimodal Connectivity

The 104th meeting of the Network Planning Group reviewed a series of infrastructure proposals aimed at enhancing multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. Five major rail projects were examined for alignment with integrated planning principles, improved last-mile access and strengthened economic linkages.

Gummidipundi–Gudur Third and Fourth Lines: The Ministry of Railways has proposed an 89.96-km third and fourth line between Gummidipundi and Gudur, traversing Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu and Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh. The corridor is designed to support multimodal freight flows linked to industrial hubs, aiding sectors such as fertilisers, petroleum products, container traffic, power plants and cement. With an expected capacity of 25.07 MTPA, the route will streamline cargo movement through Chennai Port via the newly sanctioned Gummidipundi–Sullurupeta–Gudur multitracking section.

Konkan Railway – Third Financial Restructuring: A proposal to improve the financial and operational health of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited covers Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. It includes infrastructure upgrades such as two new tunnels at Pernem and Old Goa and three new crossing stations at Mayem, Neura-O-Grande and Mookambika Road–Byndoor. These works aim to reduce congestion, enhance safety and improve regional connectivity.

Nidadavolu–Duvvada Third and Fourth Lines: The Ministry has proposed 198.10 km of additional lines between Nidadavolu and Duvvada in Andhra Pradesh on the Howrah–Chennai main line, a high-density corridor under Mission 3000 MT. The project addresses rising freight volumes from expanding Andhra Pradesh ports and responds to heightened passenger demand, improving capacity for movements toward Visakhapatnam and southern destinations. The line will support logistics requirements of units such as Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Ramco Cements and Chettinad Cement.

Nagda–Mathura Third and Fourth Lines: A 567.860-km augmentation across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan is proposed to support the Golden Quadrilateral freight network. As the only un-augmented section on High-Density Network-3, strengthening this corridor will enhance carrying capacity on the Delhi–Mumbai route. The upgrade will benefit industries including thermal power, petroleum, fertilisers, cement and warehousing.

Ghaziabad–New Sitapur Third and Fourth Lines: The proposal for 402.78 km of new broad-gauge lines across ten districts in Uttar Pradesh aims to relieve congestion toward the Northern Frontier Railways and improve freight and commuter efficiency. Supported by strong road networks and access to major airports including Delhi, Bareilly and Lucknow, the corridor will improve multimodal integration, reduce logistics costs and enhance capacity for future economic activity.

The meeting was chaired by the Joint Secretary (Logistics), Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
