PIB Clears Rs 58 Billion Lucknow Metro East-West Line

The Public Investment Board (PIB) has approved the Rs 58 billion East-West Corridor of Lucknow Metro under Phase 1B, marking a major milestone for the city’s expanding metro network. The corridor will connect Charbagh to Vasant Kunj and now awaits final clearance from the Union Cabinet before construction begins.

Approved earlier by the Uttar Pradesh government in March 2024, the project spans 11.165 kilometres and includes 12 stations—seven underground and five elevated. A total of 4.286 km will be elevated and 6.879 km underground. The corridor will integrate directly with the North-South line at Charbagh Metro Station, creating a seamless interchange for commuters.

The underground stations will be Charbagh, Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, Pandeyganj, City Railway Station, Medical Chauraha, and Chowk. The elevated stations will be Thakurganj, Balaganj, Sarfarazganj, Moosabagh, and Vasant Kunj.

Once operational, the East-West Corridor is expected to enhance access to densely populated areas of Old Lucknow such as Aminabad and Chowk, while connecting new developments like Vasant Kunj. This extension will increase the city’s total metro network from 23 km to 35 km.

Compared to other metro systems across India, Lucknow’s expansion has progressed slowly. Delhi’s network stretches 435 km, while Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad have reached 90 km, 77 km, 69 km, and 59 km respectively.

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) MD Sushil Kumar stated, “This expansion will offer world-class urban mobility even in the city’s most congested zones. We’re confident of delivering it ahead of schedule.”
