Telangana seeks JICA funding for Metro Phase 2

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has sought financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2, during his visit to Tokyo on Thursday.

The CM presented a proposal for the Rs 242.69 billion project, which is planned as a joint venture between the State and Central governments. Of this, the Telangana government is seeking Rs 116.93 billion—or 48 per cent of the cost—as a loan from JICA, in line with India’s foreign debt funding norms.

Revanth Reddy met with JICA senior vice president Shohei Hara and other top officials to highlight Telangana’s investor-friendly policies and infrastructure plans. He underlined Hyderabad’s growing global profile and urged support not just for the metro expansion, but also for the Musi River rejuvenation and development of radial roads linking the Outer Ring Road to the proposed Regional Ring Road.

The CM reiterated his vision to transform Hyderabad into a global city on par with hubs like New York and Tokyo, and asked JICA to consider backing key urban projects that align with that goal.

In response, Shohei Hara acknowledged the longstanding partnership between JICA and Telangana and encouraged the state to formally route its proposals through the Central government for further consideration.
