Indian Railways, one of the world’s largest rail networks, is nearing the completion of a significant electrification project, with 93.83 per cent of its Broad Gauge (BG) network now electrified, the ministry of railways said, marking a substantial increase from just 21,801 km electrified by 2014. In 2023 alone, the state-run behemoth electrified 6,577 route km, contributing to its goal of full electrification of its 65,556 route km broad gauge network. This ambitious project is part of India’s broader commitment to sustainability and reducing dependence on imported crude oil, thereby saving foreign currency. It aligns with global environmental efforts and positions Indian Railways at the forefront of green transportation initiatives.
