Jal Jeevan Mission: Govt allocates Rs 5,009 cr grant for Karnataka

The central grant to Karnataka under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) for FY22 has been increased to Rs 5,009 crore by the government as against the previous grant of Rs 1,189 crore in FY21.

While approving this four-fold increase in the allocation, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister, Jal Shakti, guaranteed complete assistance for supplying tap water in each rural home in Karnataka by 2023.

In 2019, at the beginning of the mission, only 17% had a tap water supply out of 19.20 crore households in India.

In Karnataka, from the total of 91.19 lakh houses, 29.96 lakh households (32.86%) have been equipped with tap water connections.

At the launch of JJM on 15th August 2019, 24.51 lakh (26.88%) households had a tap water supply. Now, out of 91.19 lakh houses, Karnataka provided 29.96 lakh households (32.86%) with tap water connections.

Throughout the 22 months, just 5.44 lakh households in the state were given a tap water supply. Karnataka has planned to give piped water connections to 25.17 lakh households in 2021-22, 17.93 lakh tap water connections in 2022-23, and the rest of 19.93 lakh piped water connections in 2023-24 for every rural household.

Currently, there is a 23.36% increase of 40.5% in rural households over the country that have received piped connections.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Goa, Telangana, and Puducherry have reached 100% household connection in every rural area and have become ‘Har Ghar Jal’. Currently, in 69 districts and over 98 thousand villages, every household has a tap water supply.

In 2021-22, Rs 1,426 crore has been allotted to Karnataka as the 15th FC tied grant for water & sanitation to Rural Local Bodies/ PRIs.

There is guaranteed funding of Rs 7,524 crore for the coming five years, up to 2025-26.

This huge investment in Karnataka would stimulate economic activities and also increase the economy of rural areas. It would also create new employment opportunities in villages.
