Tata Steel UISL Inaugurates Automated Water Supply System

Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Limited (TSUISL) inaugurated an automated water supply system at the Kadma Water Tower in Jamshedpur on Sunday, marking a move to modernise urban water management. The system installation was led by senior TSUISL officials and other Tata Steel leaders, with the launch presented as part of a phased upgrade to the local distribution network. The event formed part of ongoing efforts to improve service reliability and operational efficiency.

The Kadma Water Tower serves 18,500 connections across multiple neighbourhoods through 34 distribution valves, and the new automation replaces manual valve operation with actuator operated valves running on a predefined schedule. The automated controls are intended to ensure more timely and reliable deliveries of drinking water to consumers in the Kadma area and to reduce dependence on manual intervention. Local teams were reported to be involved in commissioning and testing the system ahead of full operational roll out.

TSUISL has now automated three major water towers, including Central, Sonari and Kadma, as part of a broader smart water network initiative aimed at enhancing customer experience and service continuity. The programme focuses on data driven distribution management, scheduled valve actuation and reduced response times for supply disruptions. Company representatives indicated that the measures would support urban service resilience and planned maintenance regimes.

The project is expected to create a template for further automation of towers in the city and to inform comparable upgrades in other urban localities served by the organisation. Continued collaboration between engineering, operations and corporate service teams will be required to scale the technology and to monitor performance metrics over time. Residents are expected to benefit from improved predictability in supply as the automated systems settle into regular operation.
