Chennai's Thiruvanmiyur to get four-lane flyover

In Chennai, work to construct a 1.3 km-long flyover crossing three junctions in Thiruvanmiyur is likely to commence by September. According to the proposal, the flyover will cross the Jayanthi-Theyagaraja theatres junction, the one after the Marundeeswarar temple and the RTO office.

The final detailed project report is under preparation for the four-lane flyover that will take off on West Avenue Road just after the bridge across the Buckingham Canal and land near the RTO office signal on the East Coast Road. Rough estimates put the cost of the flyover at Rs. 250 crore. The Highways Department took up this proposal to decongest the Thiruvanmiyur junction after the Chennai Corporation dropped a plan to construct a flyover-cum-subway at the junction.

Local traffic from residential areas near the RTO office and vehicles from the ECR and those heading from Adyar and Rajiv Gandhi Salai and proceeding towards the ECR will benefit from this flyover that will come up on single pillars, similar to those being used in the construction of flyovers at Thirumangalam, Porur and Moolakadai and the Metro Rail project.
