Winners - Century Textiles

Century Textiles and Industries was incorporated in 1897. Till 1951, the company operated only one cotton textile mill at Mumbai. Thereafter, it has made rapid progress in expanding and diversifying its activities. At present, it is a trendsetter in cotton textiles and has a remarkable presence in the yarn, denim, viscose filament rayon yarn, tyre-cords, caustic soda, sulphuric acid, salt, cement, and pulp and paper industries.

The company´s cement division - Century Cement - was established in 1974 at Baikunth (Tilda), Raipur, in Chhattisgarh.

Set up with the initial capacity of 0.6 mtpa of Portland cement, today, the plant produces 100 per cent blended cement with a total capacity of 2.1 mtpa. The cement plant is equipped with a captive power plant to ensure uninterrupted power supply. Century Textiles sells its cement under the brand name ´Birla Gold´. Apart from this, the company has cement plants - Maihar Cement and Maihar Cement Unit No 2 at Sarlanagar in Madhya Pradesh with an installed capacity of 4.20 mtpa; Manikgarh Cement at Gadchandur in Maharashtra with an installed capacity of 2.20 mtpa; and Sonar Bangla (grinding unit) at Murshidabad in West Bengal with an installed capacity of 1.50 mtpa.

The combined capacity of all the cement plants is 10 mtpa. Century Cement is a pioneer in producing blended cement, ie, Portland Pozzolana Cement. In FY2016, its topline grew at around 3.1 per cent to Rs 4,253.53 crore as against Rs 4,127.22 crore in FY2015. Net profit came down by 39 per cent to Rs 166.82 crore in FY2016.
