Captive Coal Output Hits 15.57 MT, Up 16 Per Cent

Coal production from captive and commercial mines reached 15.57 million tonnes in June 2025, while dispatches stood at 17.31 million tonnes, according to Ministry of Coal data.

For the first quarter of FY26, output increased 16.39 per cent year on year and dispatches rose 13.03 per cent, reflecting higher operational efficiency and better use of mining capacity across the power, steel and cement sectors.

Last month the Ministry cleared the opening of Utkal A Mine, with a peak rated capacity of 25 million tonnes, and issued vesting orders for three additional coal blocks, pushing total allocations past 200.

A three year comparison of first quarter figures shows consistent gains in both production and dispatches, underscoring the sector’s steady upward trajectory. The government says these measures will reinforce domestic supply, cut import dependence and support its vision of a resilient, self reliant economy.
