NCL Imposes Rs 300 per Tonne Levy on Coal

Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, will introduce a "Singrauli Punarasthapan (Rejuvenation) Charge" of Rs 300 per tonne on coal dispatches across all its mines, effective May 1, 2025. The additional levy is projected to generate approximately Rs 38.77 billion , according to a regulatory filing by the company.

This charge will be uniformly applied over the notified price of coal. NCL, which primarily operates in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli and Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra districts, plays a crucial role in supplying coal to both power and non-power sectors.

Having produced 117 million tonnes of coal till January 2025, NCL has been a key contributor to Coal India’s overall output. The move aligns with broader efforts by Coal India’s subsidiaries to enhance revenue streams while funding mine rehabilitation and resettlement projects in coal-bearing regions.
