Singareni, NTPC ink 4 deals for coal supply, payment, flexibility

Singareni Collieries Company and NTPC have entered into four agreements regarding the supply of coal. The agreements pertain to the provision of coal to NTPC's Kudgi and Solapur thermal units, adjustments in coal supply based on plant requirements, and advance payment for fuel supply to the Ramagundam plant.

According to the agreements, Singareni will supply 67.5 lakh tonnes of coal annually to NTPC's 2x800 megawatt thermal station in Kudgi, Karnataka, and an additional 28.2 lakh tonnes to the 660 megawatt project in Solapur, Maharashtra.

Singareni authorities stated that the agreements were signed following instructions from the Ministry of Coal. The third agreement involves advance payment to Singareni for coal supply to NTPC's Ramagundam plant, departing from the usual practice of payment after receiving the coal. The Ramagundam plant consumes approximately 85 to 90 lakh tonnes of coal per month.

The fourth agreement facilitates the adjustment of coal supplies amounting to 207.7 lakh tonnes, which are linked to various NTPC units. Singareni authorities mentioned that these two agreements are unique, as they mark the first of their kind between the two entities, despite having long-standing coal supply agreements.

Singareni officials revealed that the company supplies coal to thermal power plants in 16 states, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Goa.

They further stated that during the 2022-23 period, Singareni supplied 549.69 lakh tonnes of coal to thermal power plants and an additional 117.25 lakh tonnes to non-power generating companies such as cement, sponge iron, pharmaceutical, fertilizer, paper, and ceramics industries. The total coal sales include a remarkable 2.58 million tonnes sold through the 8th tranche of coal auctions.
