Mitsubishi Power to Upgrade Boiler Systems at Vietnam’s O Mon 1 Plant

Mitsubishi Power, the power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI), has received a contract to upgrade existing boiler equipment as part of the oil-to-natural gas fuel conversion project at the O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant in Can Tho, southern Vietnam.
Under the contract, Mitsubishi Power will supply key equipment, including gas burners for the boiler, leveraging its expertise as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the existing system. The upgrade will enable the plant to switch from oil to natural gas, significantly reducing CO? emissions. The company will also install a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust gases, ensuring compliance with stricter environmental standards.
The O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant, comprising two 330 MW units commissioned in 2009 and 2015, delivers a total output of 660 MW. The current conversion project is led by Power Generation Corporation 2 (EVNGENCO2), part of the Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN) Group. Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work is being executed by a consortium of LILAMA Corporation and Power Generation Corporation 3 (EVNGENCO3), also part of EVN Group. Mitsubishi Power received the contract for the main equipment from this consortium.
Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, part of MHI Group and based in Singapore, will provide EPC engineering support and technical assistance through on-site personnel deployment.
Makoto Fujita, Senior General Manager, Steam Power Business Division, Energy Systems at MHI, said, “As the OEM of the O Mon 1 power plant, we are proud to support Vietnam’s transition to cleaner energy. This project reinforces our commitment to ensuring energy stability while advancing decarbonisation in the region.”
Earlier this year, Mitsubishi Power also secured a contract to supply two advanced J-Series Air-Cooled (JAC) gas turbines for the adjacent O Mon 4 Thermal Power Plant — a 1,155 MW gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) project scheduled for completion in 2028.
Vietnam’s Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) aims to diversify the national energy mix, reduce coal dependence, and expand natural gas and renewables. Through its involvement in the O Mon 1 and O Mon 4 projects, Mitsubishi Power continues to strengthen its contribution to Vietnam’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Akihiro Ondo, CEO and Managing Director, Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, said, “Vietnam has one of the fastest-growing economies in ASEAN. We are committed to supporting the country’s sustainable energy development through our advanced technology and dedicated services.”
Mitsubishi Power remains focused on deploying high-performance, reliable technologies that ensure stable power supply and promote global energy decarbonisation, contributing to both economic growth and environmental conservation.
