Reliance Industries to start gas production from MJ field in Q4 FY22

Reliance Industries (RIL) will start its natural gas production from the MJ field, the third and last set of discoveries the company is developing in the eastern offshore of the KG-D6 block in October-December 2022, to increase its overall output by two-third.

Reliance and its partner UK-based firm, British Petroleum (BP) plans to use a floating production system in the Bay of Bengal to bring the deepest gas production discovery in the KG-D6 block.

The MJ-1 field is located 2,000 metres below the Dhirubhai-1 and Dhirubhai-3 fields (D1 and D3, respectively). It is the first and the largest gas field in the KG-D6 block and can hold about 0.988 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of contingent resources.

The gas field even has oil deposits, which will be produced using the floating system called Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO). The company said that the FPSO and the subsea systems are well on track.

RIL and BP are developing three deep-water gas developments in KG-D6 - R Cluster, Satellite Cluster, and MJ, which would produce nearly 30 million standard cubic metres every day of natural gas by 2023, meeting 15% of the gas demand of India.

The R Cluster production was started in December 2020, and Satellite Cluster in April. R Cluster can reach plateau gas production of about 12.9 million metric standard cubic meters per day (mmscmd), while Satellite Cluster only six mmscmd. The MJ gas field will have a peak output of 12 mmscmd. RIL's average production from April to June in 2021 was 16.6 mmscmd from the KG-D6 block.

RIL is operating the KG-D6 block with 66.67% participating interest, and BP holds a share of 33.33%.

The company told the media that it got $3.62 per million British terminal unit (mmBtu) for the production of gas in the KG-D6 in the April-June quarter. It was lower than $3.99 per mmBtu from the previous year.
