Maharashtra is currently facing power cuts of 800 MW to 1,500 MW daily. Since June, the state's power demand has increased from 14,510 MW to 16,299 MW. MahaVitaran, the state distribution company, has put on hold the withdrawal of 2,000 MW from its Koyna hydro project to avoid further depletion of water from the reservoir, in view of the likelihood of less rain. The company currently withdraws 600 MW from state-owned MahaGenco, 5,500 MW from the central sector and 1,100 MW from the private sector. It also gets 2,500 MW under its long-term power purchase agreements.
