Andhra Pradesh leads in energy efficiency with record LED installations

Andhra Pradesh has achieved a milestone in the national drive for energy efficiency, with a record 29.5 lakh LED streetlights retrofitted under the Street Lighting National Program (SLNP) scheme, the highest in the country. Additionally, the state has distributed over 2.2 crore LED bulbs as part of the Unnat Jyothi Affordable LEDs for All (Ujala) initiative.

On the 9th anniversary of Ujala and SLNP, the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) announced the distribution of 36.86 crore LED bulbs, 72.18 lakh tube lights, and 23.59 lakh energy-efficient fans since the inception of these programs. Notably, EESL achieved an impressive 90% reduction in the prices of these lighting appliances, showcasing the success of Ujala and SLNP initiatives in promoting energy efficiency.

This significant effort has resulted in an estimated annual energy savings of 48.42 billion kWh. The positive impact extends further, with a reduction in peak demand by 9,789 MW and a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions by 39.30 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Equally noteworthy are the estimated annual monetary savings of Rs 193.34 billion in consumer electricity bills.

The Convergence Energy Services, a subsidiary of EESL, implemented the innovative Gram Ujala scheme, providing rural households with 7-watt and 12-watt LED bulbs at an affordable rate of Rs 10 each, backed by a three-year warranty. The exchange program, where old incandescent lamps were swapped for energy-efficient alternatives, significantly contributed to both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.

Expressing gratitude during a review meeting, EESL CEO Vishal Kapoor thanked the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, state governments, and Union Territories for their participation in this success. Kapoor urged collective commitment to propel the success of Ujala and SLNP initiatives, emphasizing their transformative impact on energy efficiency. He encouraged widespread adoption to ensure a sustainable and greener future for the nation.
