Australian govt invites bids for 600 MW energy storage in SA-Vic Region

The Australian Department overseeing Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water has issued an invitation for proposals to develop energy storage projects in South Australia or Victoria, with a combined capacity of up to 600 MW or 2,400 MWh.

The Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) South Australia-Victoria (SA-Vic) tender specifically aims to establish energy storage projects with a continuous discharge capability of at least 2 hours at their nameplate capacity, and a minimum size of 30 MW. The eligible projects must be located in South Australia or Victoria.

The tender will allocate 800 MWh to both South Australia and Victoria, with an additional 800 MWh to be allocated to either of the regions. The CIS is part of the Australian Government's initiative to encourage investments in dispatchable renewable energy generation and storage.

The tender process involves two stages: Stage A, where project bids are submitted by 5 pm AEDT on February 23, 2024, and Stage B, focusing on financial value bids, scheduled for April 2024 (exact date to be confirmed). Stage A is currently open, and the registration period will close on February 16, 2024.

Projects selected through the CIS SA-Vic tender are anticipated to provide clean, dispatchable capacity to the national electricity grid by the end of 2027, contributing to the reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability of the energy system for all Australians.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), along with its subsidiary AEMO Service (ASL), will oversee the competitive CIS SA-Vic tender on behalf of the Australian Government and make recommendations. The Australian Government will then select projects to receive revenue support based on AEMO's suggestions.

In a recent development, winners were announced for the AEMO auction, including Squadron Energy, Neoen Australia, A-CAES NSW (Hydrostor Australia), Lightsource Development Services Australia, and Ark Energy Projects. These winners will develop 950 MW of renewable energy projects and 550 MW of long-duration storage. Earlier, AEMO received bids for over 8 GW of wind, solar, and long-duration storage projects in the inaugural tendering process of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, with bids for over 5.5 GW of wind and solar and 2.5 GW of long-duration storage projects.
