Bihar to receive 383 MW additional power

According to a spokesperson for the company, Bihar is set to receive an additional 383 MW of power soon. The 72-hour full load trial run of the second unit of stage I of the NTPC Barh Super Thermal Power Plant (STPP), with a capacity of 660 MW, was successfully completed as per the norms of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).

As a result, Bihar's power share from NTPC plants will increase from the current allocation of 6,560 MW to 6,943 MW. Vishwanath Chandan, the NTPC spokesperson, stated that they will now engage in discussions with the beneficiary states and announce the commercial operation of the unit in July.

The completion of the full load trial run operation signifies that the second unit of stage I of the Barh plant is officially ready for commercial generation. This unit will add 660 MW of electricity to the beneficiary states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Sikkim. The total generation capacity of the Barh plant will increase from the current 1,980 MW to 2,640 MW, out of its targeted installed capacity of 3,300 MW (5 x 660 MW).

Out of the electricity generated by the unit, Bihar will receive 58 per cent (383 MW), while the remaining portion will be allocated to Jharkhand, Odisha, and Sikkim. The Barh STPP, located in the Barh sub-division of Patna district, currently has a commercial installed capacity of 1,980 MW from its three units, each with a capacity of 660 MW. Bihar currently receives 1,526 MW of power from this plant, which will increase to 1,909 MW.

The NTPC Barh plant utilises environmentally friendly supercritical technology and has four units of 660 MW each. The fourth unit, which has just completed the full load trial operation, will join the two units of stage II that have been generating power since November 15, 2014, and February 18, 2016, respectively. The first unit of stage 1 has been under commercial generation since November 2021. The Barh plant currently supplies 1,526 MW of electricity to Bihar, which will increase to 1,909 MW.

DSGSS Babji, the NTPC regional executive director (east-1), praised his team for their professional and calibrated efforts, leading to the successful completion of the full load trial operation of the second unit. NTPC has invested approximately Rs 800 billion in Bihar, with an installed power generation capacity of 9,070 MW across six projects in the state, while an additional 660 MW is under construction.

Asit Dutta, executive director of NTPC Barh, mentioned that work on the third and final unit of stage 1 is currently in progress and is expected to be completed next year. NTPC currently supplies around 90 per cent of Bihar's average daily power requirement, which ranges between 6,000 MW and 6,500 MW. However, the peak load demand reached 7,000 MW during the summer.
