Global Coalition Targets 3x Renewable Energy and 2x Efficiency by 2030

In a significant development at the Pre-COP event held in Abu Dhabi, the COP28 Presidency, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) have jointly released a comprehensive report. Titled "Tripling Renewable Power and Doubling Energy Efficiency by 2030: Crucial Steps Towards 1.5 ?C," this report outlines an ambitious vision to dramatically increase global renewable energy capacity and enhance energy efficiency efforts. The ultimate goal is to reach a minimum of 11,000 GW in renewable energy capacity and double annual energy efficiency improvements by the year 2030.

This initiative aligns perfectly with the objectives of the COP28 Presidency's Action Agenda, which seeks to expedite a just and orderly energy transition while keeping the crucial 1.5 ?C global warming target within reach.

The report's unveiling took place during the Pre-COP event in Abu Dhabi, strategically timed ahead of the official COP28 summit. Its primary purpose is to set the stage for negotiations at the upcoming global climate conference and to offer guidance on the essential mechanisms required to meet the energy targets established.

Sultan Al Jaber, the COP28 President, emphasised the significance of tripling renewable power generation and doubling energy efficiency in the context of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He called upon a unified commitment from all stakeholders, both at the domestic and international levels, to translate the report's recommendations into tangible action.

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera stressed the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for collective action to achieve the ambitious goal of tripling renewable power capacity by 2030. The report builds on IRENA's World Energy Transitions Outlook, which serves as the analytical foundation for its recommendations.

Bruce Douglas, CEO of the Global Renewables Alliance, underscored the importance of this initiative in the fight against climate change. He emphasised that the most significant commitment policymakers can make is to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency, underscoring the need for close collaboration between policymakers, industry, and civil society to swiftly implement the report's recommendations.

The report, drawing upon IRENA's World Energy Transitions Outlook 2023: 1.5 ?C pathway, categorises key enablers into five segments: Infrastructure and system operation, policy and regulation, supply chain capabilities, public and private finance scaling, and strengthened international collaboration.

As COP28 approaches, the collaborative effort between the COP28 Presidency, IRENA, and GRA highlights the growing global consensus on the importance of achieving these ambitious benchmarks. The Presidency, along with the European Commission, is actively advocating for nations to support the global renewables and energy efficiency pledge, with several champion countries already expressing their commitment to these worldwide objectives.
