India Plans ALMM For Solar Inverters

After solar PV modules and cells, India is preparing an Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar inverters to strengthen domestic manufacturing, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Monday.
Speaking at the 6th CII International Energy Conference and Exhibition, Joshi noted that the ministry is also exploring a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cells. A solar inverter converts direct current (DC) from solar panels into alternating current (AC) for power use.
The government earlier introduced ALMM for solar PV modules and has notified that ALMM for solar cells will take effect from June 2026. Work is also underway to create approved lists for wafers, ingots and polysilicon. Joshi highlighted that India has set a target of achieving fully domestically manufactured solar cells by 2028 and is working towards building a complete indigenous ecosystem for wafers and ingots. He further directed the ministry to prepare a roadmap for domestic polysilicon production to ensure a fully integrated solar value chain.
India, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, has already reached 250 Gigawatt (GW) of installed non-fossil power generation capacity, with plans to double this to 500 GW by 2030. To accelerate progress, the ministry will soon hold a second round of discussions with state governments on energy storage, energy transition and power purchase agreements.
A joint report by CII and EY released during the event said that non-fossil energy capacity must expand 40-fold to provide at least two-thirds of India’s primary energy requirements by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat vision.
